The visual style is crucial for this movie because there will be hardly any dialogue. The movie lives through the beauty and atmosphere of its images and settings. The old man, very ill and at the end of his life is the center of attention. The movie starts off in black and white; the atmosphere is gray, rainy, ordinary and melancholic. But as soon as the retrospection starts, the images become colorful (opalescent colors) and the atmosphere is happy, beautiful and full of life. The picture neglects the depth of focus and stays with a light focus almost constantly in the picture level of the protagonist. Backgrounds will appear fuzzy sometimes and not as clearly in focus. The pictures of Warsaw shall reflect the beautiful parts of the city as well as the ugly parts that find its cause in the war. The movie creates the desire in the audience to get to know this city where past and present is so close to each other.
